Next Steps

If you have limited time, help people make connections by suggesting simple steps people can take now to create change.

Individual actions:

  • Refuse to purchase alcohol for persons under age 21
  • Refuse to provide alcohol or allow individuals under 21 to consume alcohol in your home or on your property.
  • Model responsible alcohol practices by limiting your own alcohol comsumption.
  • Learn more about what is going on with kids and alcohol.

Parent actions:

  • Don't be swayed by what other parents are doing.
  • Limit alcohol at your own parties and gatherings.
  • If you think your child is drinking - they probably are. Address the issue now.

Community actions:

  • Pay attention to the content and placement of alcohol billboards and advertisements in your community.
  • Work with others to eliminate newspaper and radio ads that encourage heavy drinking (e.g., drink specials, extended happy hours, etc.)
  • Eliminate or limit alcohol sponsorship at family-oriented events.
  • Provide a variety of inexpensive, alcohol-free alternatives at community events and festivals.

Alcohol retailer actions:

  • Train new employees within five days of hire on state laws and consequences related to alcohol sales and services.
  • Make sure employees are clear on the procedures for checking ID.
  • Establish seller/server rights and responsibilities, including the right to refuse sales or service.

Campus actions:

  • Work with the community to reduce or eliminate "high-risk" drink promotions (women drink free, extended happy hours, etc.)
  • Support alcohol-free and other drug-free campus activities.
  • Educate students about "high-risk" and "low-risk" consumption to help them assess their own alcohol use.
  • Eliminate alcohol beverage industry advertising on your campus and at athletic events.
  • Encourage university administration to consistently enforce disciplinary actions associated with alcohol policy violations.
