Rite Aid Drug Quiz

BR
iDGES coordinates the Madison County Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show, a state wide competition involving students in the 5th-8th grades. The Drug Quiz Show aims to heighten awareness about the harmful use of substances by providing an opportunity to have fun while gaining knowledge, skills and self-confidence needed to make safe, healthy, choices in life  especially choices about the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

In preparing for the Quiz Show teams of students learn factual information about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, with the help of a faculty advisor. During the Quiz Show the teams answer questions like:
  • What drug is involved in 1/3 of all suicides, ½ of all murders, and ½ of all fatal car accidents? (Alcohol)
  • Crack is a form of what stimulant? (Cocaine)
  • "Roids" and "Juice" are slang for what class of drug? (Steroids)

Schools that have participated include: Otto Shortell Middle School, Canastota, Madison, Cazenovia, Morrisville, VVS, Chittenango, DeRuyter and Stockbridge have signed up to participate in the games. In each match, questions are given in three rounds. In the first round each team answers cooperatively. In the second round each student responds individually. In the third round the first student to respond gets to answer the question.

The school winning the local competition goes on to compete at a regional level. Regional winners then go on to compete in the New York State Quiz Show. For more information about the Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show or to volunteer for the event this year, call the BRiDGES office at (315) 697-3947.
