Teen Institute

Teen Institute (TI) is a youth leadership development program designed to educate young people about how to prevent the harmful use of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and self-destructive behaviors in themselves and their peers. TI is an intensive, experiential program that emphasizes peer leadership and positive life-skills education.

Madison County TI, which was founded in 1992, is part of an ongoing national prevention research program designed to study student knowledge, values, and behaviors about substance abuse and related social problems. In Madison County TI is operated by BRiDGES . The program includes the following components.

  • Participants are selected using a student and faculty survey designed to identify people with the ability to influence others in a positive way.

  • Students from area high schools spend the third weekend in July (Thursday to Sunday) at a local college where students and faculty advisors come together to bond and form common ground about issues related to the harmful use of substances in their schools and communities. Adults from the community serve as group leaders and graduates of TI assist in the teaching process.

  • Students learn a prevention curriculum that they present to middle school students in their home schools during the school year.

  • Students also plan events and activities for their peers in their schools

  • Students sign a pledge not to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The pledge also involves a commitment to behave in a manner that models the healthy life style and prevention message of TI.

  • Two reunions are held during the school year to reinforce the TI message and provide ongoing support.
